Lightsaber "V2"
Movie props often have stories behind them, which often interest me more than the prop itself. In the film "Return of the Jedi" two different lightsabers were interchanged throughout filming, to represent Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber. One, known as the "Hero" prop, which was intended for close up shots and was made with great precision and attention to detail, is often recognized by the copper paint near the top of the handle. The second, known by fans as the "V2" or "Shared Saber" is a recycled prop from the first film with slightly different paint, re-purposed for Luke. While the Hero was machined out of aluminum, the V2 was a cast aluminum piece with more inconsistencies.
Rather than making a perfect machined version, I chose to re-create a one off "V2" using the same technique as it was originally made, which was an aluminum sand casting. By doing this, it highlights the inconsistencies that were present on the original prop.
